What Are The Benefits of Micro-Needling?

IN THIS ARTICLE:

Rolling needles over your face to intentionally puncture your skin may sound like something out of a body horror flick, but it’s an actual skin treatment method - microneedling - with proven skin benefits. Many beauty enthusiasts swear by the results of microneedling: smoother skin with a youthful glow. It’s an in-clinic procedure that you can also do at home using the handheld derma roller which is essentially its DIY version.

Curious to learn more about this beauty trend with a celebrity following? Keep scrolling through to understand how microneedling works and how you can use it to your skin’s advantage.

What is microneedling?

DEFINITION

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, uses hundreds of microneedles to create minuscule wounds on the first layer of skin to trigger the wound-healing process.

How Does Microneedling Work?

How Does Microneedling Work?

When you get wounded, the skin usually begins the healing process in a matter of seconds. The same process goes for microneedling, creating tiny wounds to call on the healing powers of the body. The regeneration process employs the help of the structural proteins collagen and elastin which are responsible for the anti-aging effects of microneedling.

Since derma rolling is a simpler version of microneedling, it uses shorter needles to create micro wounds. The tiny pathways created not only trigger collagen production but also serve as a more efficient delivery system for serums and other skincare products.

What Are The Benefits Of Microneedling?

The main purpose of microneedling is to improve the surface of the skin. With consistent treatments, the healing process helps reduce and fade scars that may be caused by acne, injury, and even burns.

Enhanced collagen production is another benefit that brings about an abundance of more advantageous results. Anti-aging effects include reduced appearance of wrinkles, diminishing fine lines, reduced skin darkening or discoloration, and overall skin rejuvenation.

Microneedling, in combination with medication, has also been shown to promote better hair growth for alopecia patients. The use of this treatment has been extended to other conditions such as stretch marks and excessive sweating, both with favorable results. A 2016 study published by the Indian Dermatology Online Journal discusses these advances in microneedling

How To Use A Derma Roller At Home

How To Use A Derma Roller At Home

To get the best results (and for your safety too), it’s important to follow the steps in using an at-home derma roller. Here’s a basic guide that applies to most models.

  1. Cleanse your face and dry thoroughly before the treatment. Apply your preferred serum.
  2. Hold your derma roller and start rolling vertically, up and down the cheeks, forehead, and chin. Do horizontal next and then diagonal.
  3. Apply another layer of serum after using the roller.
  4. Spray the roller with 70 percent isopropyl alcohol before storage

Here’s a derma roller you can try: the Project E Beauty Derma Roller. This cosmetic needling instrument uses 0.25 mm grade needles (in grade A titanium) which is the ideal length for micro exfoliating. Rolling this device gently over the skin creates thousands of minuscule contact points, encouraging a natural healing process to rejuvenate and repair the skin for a smoother, younger, and healthy looking appearance.

Does Microneedling Hurt? What Are The Side Effects?

You don’t have to suffer for beauty. Portable derma rollers are usually equipped with shorter needles that allow for only little to no discomfort at all. Professional microneedling tools for in-clinic procedures use longer needles which can be painful for some, at times. To prevent any more discomfort while using an at-home roller, use only gentle pressure that you can comfortably tolerate.

A few minor side effects may appear shortly such as redness, bruising, and irritation. These usually go away on their own within a few days. Infection may happen if you don’t keep things hygienic, like cleaning and disinfecting your derma roller right after every use.

How Often Should You Derma Roll At Home?

How Often Should You Derma Roll At Home?

A treatment period of five consecutive days followed by a hiatus of equal length is recommended. This schedule gives the skin ample time to rest and recover. Once the skin has recovered, you may continue with a new cycle. Continue in this manner – five days of treatment and five days of rest – for two months. It is suggested to replace your Derma Roller after 10-15 treatments.

How Long Should You Wait For The Results?

Can’t wait to compare your derma roller before and after photos? Give it a month. To understand how long any new treatment will take effect on skin, you must know that complete skin cell turnover happens in a span of 30 days for typical adult skin. The same amount of time should be considered when trying out a new routine. Immediate effects of derma rolling may be possible in as early as two weeks. These include better response to skincare products and softer skin.
